¿Qué son los idioms en inglés?
Los idioms son frases y dichos que se usan en un idioma para hacer referencia a la historia o cultura de un país o región. Es normal que nos se puedan traducir de forma literal de un idioma a otro, pero siempre puedes encontrar algo equivalente.
Para que te des una mejor idea te pongo de ejemplo un idioms que se usa en mi país Nicaragua. "De tal palo, tal astilla", este dicho es muy popular cuando el hijo heredo una característica, cualidad o habilidad de su padre o madre.
Un ejemplo en inglés seria. "When pigs fly" (cuando los cerdos vuelen), esta frase se usa para indicar que algo nunca pasará, el equivalente de esa frase en mi país sería: "cuando adoquinen la playa". Por ejemplo si te gusta tomar licor y alguien te dice, ¿Cuándo vas a dejar de tomar? R: Cuando adoquinen la playa.

20 idioms o frases en inglés para principiantes
To get in / to get on
Entrar o abordar un vehiculo. Get in se usa para carros y get on para las otras formas de transporte.
- It's easiest to get in the car from the driver's side. The door on the other side doesn't work well.
- I always get on the bus to work at 34th street.
To get out of / to get off
Salir o bajarse de un vehiculo. To get out se usa para carros y to get off para cualquier otra forma de transporte.

To put on
Ponernos (generalmente cando hablamos de ropa)

To take off
Quitarse la ropa o cualquir prenda de bestir.

Llamar por telefono o llamar a alguien. Tambien podemos solo usar to call.

Iniciar o hacer funcionar ( tambien podemos usar to switch on)

Hacer que algo deje de funcionar ( tambien puedes usar to switch off o to shut off). Se utilizan para cosas que fluyen, como electricidad, agua, gas, etc.

De inmediato. Vamos a usar este idiom cuando queremos que la accion se realice de inmediato.

Levantar del suelo, la mesa, etc. con los dedos.
